The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has shut down 22 unlicensed Colleges of Education operating across the country, following a week-long enforcement exercise.
According to NCCE spokesperson Isaac Ameh, the illegal institutions were discovered during inspections carried out simultaneously in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The schools were found to be running without formal approval, in dilapidated facilities, with unqualified teaching staff, and in violation of statutory licensing procedures.
“The Commission will not allow unapproved operators to compromise the standard of teacher education in Nigeria,” Ameh stated.
This latest crackdown follows a wider enforcement campaign in 2022, when the NCCE sealed 160 illegal colleges and study centres nationwide. However, the commission did not disclose the specific locations of the 22 newly closed schools or details of legal action against proprietors.
The NCCE emphasized that its ongoing efforts are aimed at safeguarding the quality of teacher training and ensuring that all colleges meet national accreditation standards.
