NCDC Confirms No Ebola Cases in Nigeria, Strengthens Preparedness Amid DRC Outbreak

Abuja, Nigeria | September 7, 2025

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed that there are currently no cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Nigeria. The announcement was made in a public health advisory issued on Saturday in Abuja and signed by NCDC Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris.

The agency stated it is working closely with relevant federal ministries, departments, agencies, and development partners to monitor disease trends and strengthen national preparedness.

Key measures highlighted include:

Heightened surveillance at borders and points of entry to detect potential cases early.

Reinforcement of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices in healthcare facilities nationwide to protect patients and healthcare workers.

Activation of risk communication and community engagement systems to disseminate accurate information and counter misinformation.

The advisory comes amid a reported Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where authorities have confirmed 28 suspected cases and 15–16 deaths as of early September 2025.

The NCDC also advised the public to:

Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use sanitizer.

Avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or unexplained bleeding.

Avoid consumption of bushmeat, particularly bats or primates, or ensure meat is thoroughly cooked.

For healthcare professionals, strict adherence to IPC measures and immediate reporting of suspected cases is required.

Nigeria remains free of Ebola infections, but the NCDC continues to maintain vigilance through coordinated surveillance, healthcare readiness, and public awareness measures to mitigate cross-border risks.
