NCDC Confirms Surge in Lassa Fever Outbreak as Death Toll Hits 162 Across 21 States

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has raised concern over a fresh surge in Lassa fever infections across the country, and confirming that at least 162 people have lost their lives to the virus so far in 2025. The outbreak, which has now spread to 21 states, continues to pose a serious public health threat, with health authorities intensifying efforts to contain its spread.

According to the latest situation report released by the NCDC, Nigeria has witnessed a steady rise in confirmed Lassa fever cases over recent weeks, with hundreds currently under surveillance or receiving treatment in designated isolation centres nationwide. The agency disclosed that the high fatality rate underscores the urgent need for greater public awareness, improved hygiene practices, and faster response from both state governments and local health institutions.

Lassa fever, an acute viral haemorrhagic illness transmitted primarily through contact with food or household items contaminated by rodent urine or faeces, is endemic in Nigeria and usually peaks during the dry season. However, this year’s outbreak appears more aggressive, with a wider geographical spread and increased mortality.

The NCDC warned that late presentation of symptoms, poor access to healthcare facilities in rural communities, and a lack of early diagnosis continue to contribute significantly to the rising death toll. It has, therefore, urged citizens to report symptoms such as persistent fever, vomiting, bleeding, or general weakness immediately to health authorities.

In response, the agency has activated emergency response measures in affected states and is working closely with state ministries of health, treatment centres, and international partners to improve case detection, treatment, and public sensitization campaigns.

Meanwhile, Nigerians are advised to take extra precautions, especially in high-risk areas, by maintaining proper food storage, avoiding contact with rodents, and seeking immediate medical help if symptoms arise. Health workers have also been urged to adhere strictly to standard infection prevention and control protocols while attending to suspected cases.yytreat
As the outbreak evolves, the NCDC has assured the public of its commitment to curbing further spread and reducing fatalities. However, the agency stressed that containing Lassa fever requires the combined effort of communities, health workers, and authorities at all levels to ensure swift identification, reporting, and management of cases.
