The Niger Delta Youth Council has written to President Bola Tinubu, threatening to shut down oil production across the region if their demands are not met within seven days.
At the center of the dispute is the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara is facing impeachment threats. The youths are demanding:
- Immediate Restoration of Rivers State’s Revenue Allocation
- End of Impeachment Plots against Governor Fubara
- Public Retraction of Anti-Ijaw Remarks attributed to former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike
Failure to comply with these demands, the youths warn, could lead to a total shutdown of oil production across the Niger Delta region. This move would have dire consequences for Nigeria’s already fragile economy.
Asari Dokubo, a chieftain in the Niger Delta region, has also warned President Tinubu and Nyesom Wike that any attempt to remove Governor Fubara from office will have severe consequences.
