The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reiterated its warning to all travelers, advising them against carrying any luggage they did not personally pack or whose contents they are not fully aware of.
This advisory, released over the weekend, comes amid growing concerns about unsuspecting travelers being implicated in drug trafficking cases. The agency stressed that criminal syndicates are increasingly targeting innocent individuals, especially at airports and other transport hubs, to move illicit substances.
NDLEA emphasized that ignorance will not serve as an excuse in the eyes of the law if illegal substances are discovered in a traveler’s possession.
“The public, especially international travelers, are strongly advised not to accept bags or parcels from anyone unless they are completely sure of the contents. Doing otherwise puts them at great personal and legal risk,” the agency stated.
NDLEA also urged families and communities to educate their members on the risks of unknowingly becoming drug couriers, as the consequences can be dire.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-driven operations at all points of entry and exit, and vowed to intensify surveillance and enforcement activities to combat drug smuggling across Nigeria’s borders.
