The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has imposed a ₦766 million fine on MultiChoice Nigeria for multiple violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act. The regulatory body announced the sanction following an in-depth investigation that uncovered serious breaches involving the unlawful processing of users’ personal data, unauthorized cross-border data transfers, and failure to obtain valid consent from subscribers.
According to the NDPC, MultiChoice Nigeria—operator of popular entertainment platforms such as DStv and GOtv—was found to have mishandled sensitive user information, contravening key provisions of the recently enacted data protection legislation designed to safeguard the privacy rights of Nigerian citizens.
The Commission stated that the penalty serves as both a corrective and deterrent measure, reinforcing the government’s commitment to enforcing data protection compliance across all sectors. NDPC further directed the company to implement immediate remedial actions, including a comprehensive overhaul of its data governance framework and enhanced transparency in its data handling practices.
This marks one of the most significant enforcement actions since the Nigeria Data Protection Act came into force, signaling a stricter regulatory approach towards corporate data accountability. The Commission urged all data controllers and processors operating within Nigeria to ensure full compliance or risk facing similar sanctions.
