NEMA Assesses Windstorm Devastation in Shelleng and Guyuk LGAs, Adamawa State

Shelleng/Guyuk, Adamawa State – June 30, 2025

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the devastating windstorm disaster that struck parts of Shelleng and Guyuk Local Government Areas in Adamawa State.

The evaluation, carried out by officials from NEMA’s Yola Operations Office, was in response to reports of extensive damage to residential homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure following a severe windstorm that swept through the communities in recent days.

During the assessment, the NEMA team engaged with local authorities, traditional leaders, and affected residents to determine the scope and scale of destruction caused by the disaster. Preliminary findings revealed that hundreds of families have been displaced, with many homes either partially or completely destroyed.

The NEMA Head of Operations in Yola, Mr. Ladan Ayuba, who led the team, assured affected communities of the federal government’s commitment to providing relief support and long-term recovery aid. He stated, “We are here to assess the impact firsthand so that appropriate relief materials can be mobilized. We commend the resilience of the affected communities and assure them of swift intervention.”

He further noted that the agency would compile a comprehensive report and liaise with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) for coordinated relief efforts.

Local government officials and residents expressed appreciation for NEMA’s prompt response, while appealing for urgent support in the form of food supplies, shelter materials, and medical assistance to cushion the effects of the disaster.

The windstorm incident is a reminder of the increasing frequency of climate-related disasters across Nigeria, prompting renewed calls for improved early warning systems and disaster preparedness at community levels.
