As search and rescue efforts intensify following the devastating flood that swept through Kpege community in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has swiftly responded by delivering essential relief items to the affected residents.
The flood, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, was triggered by a torrential overnight downpour that caused the River Kaduna to overflow its banks, submerging homes, farmlands, and displacing dozens of households. Initial reports from local authorities indicate that several people are still missing, while others have been rendered homeless and traumatized.
NEMA, in collaboration with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) and local first responders, has deployed teams to assist with rescue and recovery operations. Emergency supplies including food items, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, blankets, toiletries, and temporary shelter materials were distributed to affected families at a designated relief camp within Mokwa.
Speaking on the response, the Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Abdullahi Kadiri, said the agency acted promptly upon receiving distress reports from the community.
“We sympathize with the people of Kpege. Our immediate goal is to save lives and alleviate the suffering of displaced persons. We are working closely with state and local authorities to provide both immediate and long-term support,” he said.
Local government officials expressed appreciation for NEMA’s quick intervention, while calling on other humanitarian organizations and well-meaning Nigerians to complement government efforts in assisting the flood victims.
Residents who spoke to reporters recounted harrowing tales of how rising floodwaters forced them to flee their homes in the middle of the night. Many lost personal belongings, food supplies, and livestock.
Meanwhile, medical teams have been deployed to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid, which often follow in the wake of such disasters.
The Niger State Government has promised to investigate the root causes of the flooding, which experts say may be linked to poor drainage systems, deforestation, and increased rainfall due to climate change. Authorities have also warned residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant as the rainy season progresses.
NEMA has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property while urging residents in vulnerable zones to heed early warning alerts and take precautionary measures.
