Lagos, Nigeria — August 17, 2025 | The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office, has carried out a flood simulation and awareness campaign in Agboyi community, Kosofe Local Government Area, as part of efforts to boost disaster readiness and grassroots resilience.
The exercise, conducted in partnership with local authorities and community stakeholders, tested emergency response strategies and trained residents on flood risks, evacuation drills, and safety precautions. Officials explained that Agboyi was chosen due to its recurring exposure to seasonal floods that often displace households and damage properties.
NEMA stressed that community sensitization is critical for minimizing casualties during emergencies. “Disaster management works best when residents are informed and prepared,” the agency noted, urging people in flood-prone areas across Lagos to take precautionary steps and heed weather alerts.
This initiative comes weeks after heavy downpours triggered severe flooding in parts of Lagos, submerging homes, disrupting traffic, and leaving many families stranded in Ikorodu, Ajegunle, and Lekki. Analysts say the Agboyi campaign highlights the need for stronger proactive measures to avoid repeat incidents as the rainy season peaks.
NEMA assured that similar drills will continue in high-risk communities across Lagos to strengthen public safety and reduce the impact of flooding and other natural disasters.
