In a decisive move to curb the dangers posed by seasonal flooding, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed rapid response teams to 15 states across the federation identified as high-risk zones for flooding. This strategic deployment, which comes ahead of the peak of Nigeria’s rainy season, is aimed at bolstering disaster preparedness, enhancing swift emergency response, and mitigating the potential humanitarian and infrastructural impact of floods.
KIIN360 can confirm that this proactive initiative is in line with early warnings issued by meteorological and hydrological agencies, which have predicted above-normal rainfall and a likelihood of riverine and flash flooding in several parts of the country. States most vulnerable to these risks have been prioritised in the current NEMA operation.
The agency, through its official handle (@nemanigeria), disclosed that the response teams will work in close collaboration with state emergency agencies, local authorities, and community leaders to ensure early action and coordinated interventions where necessary. The effort is also designed to strengthen public awareness on flood preparedness, evacuation protocols, and basic safety measures for residents in high-risk areas.
NEMA’s Director-General, Mustapha Habib Ahmed, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and livelihoods, stressing that early deployment is a key component of disaster risk reduction. He noted that the teams are equipped not only to respond to emergencies but also to support communities with sensitisation, early warning communication, and post-impact assessments if needed.
As Nigeria braces for heavier downpours in the coming weeks, the agency is urging residents in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant, adhere to safety advisories, and avoid actions that could worsen flood risk, such as blocking drainage channels or building along waterways.
With memories of past flood disasters still fresh in many communities, the federal government, through NEMA, appears keen on adopting a more proactive and preventive approach this season. KIIN360 will continue to monitor the situation and provide timely updates on flood management efforts nationwide.
