Maiduguri, July 27, 2025
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has intensified its collaborative efforts with key stakeholders to strengthen disaster mitigation and response capacity in Borno and Yobe states.
In a strategic engagement held in Maiduguri, NEMA brought together local emergency responders, security agencies, civil society organisations, and community leaders to discuss coordinated strategies aimed at reducing the impact of recurring disasters, particularly flooding and insurgency-related emergencies in the region.
The North East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Musa Zakari, noted that the meeting was part of the agency’s drive to improve community resilience through proactive planning, early warning systems, and continuous training of local disaster response teams. He stressed that preparedness and stakeholder synergy remain crucial in saving lives and reducing economic losses during emergencies.
Representatives from the Borno and Yobe State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and other humanitarian groups echoed the importance of localised responses and data-driven planning. They also emphasized the need for increased funding and public education campaigns on disaster risks.
According to NEMA, recent climate projections show a heightened risk of flash floods and extreme weather events in the Northeast. This, combined with the fragile security situation, necessitates urgent and united action to protect vulnerable communities.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining inter-agency coordination and building local capacity to ensure timely interventions in the face of future disasters.
