ABUJA — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has commenced hearing on the application submitted by Green Power Distribution Nigeria Limited seeking an Independent Electricity Distribution Network (IEDN) licence, a move that could boost power access in underserved areas of the country.
The hearing, which held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, forms part of NERC’s regulatory due process, allowing stakeholders to present comments and objections before a final decision is made on the licence approval.
Green Power Distribution Nigeria Limited is seeking to develop and operate a dedicated electricity distribution network that will function outside the existing national grid. This aligns with the Federal Government’s policy to encourage private sector participation in bridging supply gaps, especially in industrial hubs and new urban developments.
NERC officials at the session reiterated that the IEDN framework is designed to attract credible investors, improve reliability, and foster innovation in Nigeria’s electricity sector. The licence, if granted, will enable the company to build and maintain distribution infrastructure that can supply power directly to consumers within a designated area.
Industry stakeholders present at the hearing expressed optimism that such initiatives would help reduce Nigeria’s overreliance on the central grid and support energy resilience at local levels.
The Commission is expected to conclude its review process and make a determination on the application in the coming weeks. If successful, Green Power Distribution’s entry could mark a significant step toward a more decentralised and competitive power distribution landscape in Nigeria.
