The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Wednesday convened the second Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Stakeholders’ Meeting of 2025, bringing together critical players in the country’s power sector to chart a progressive course for the industry.
Held in Abuja, the high-level meeting assembled representatives from generation, transmission, and distribution companies, along with government officials, investors, regulators, and consumer advocacy groups. The session focused on evaluating ongoing reforms, addressing operational bottlenecks, and advancing the Commission’s regulatory roadmap for improved electricity delivery nationwide.
Chairman of NERC, Sanusi Garba, who presided over the session, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a transparent, reliable, and investor-friendly electricity market. He noted that while challenges persist in generation capacity, grid stability, and customer satisfaction, the Commission is taking concrete steps to promote accountability and efficiency within the sector.
“We understand the frustrations of electricity consumers, and we are working closely with all stakeholders to ensure sustainable improvements in service delivery,” Garba stated. “Today’s meeting is part of our strategy to deepen engagement and build consensus around reforms that are already yielding results, such as increased metering and improved market liquidity.”
The event featured breakout discussions on tariff reviews, distribution network expansion, system reliability, and investment incentives. Participants also reviewed recent data on system losses, debt recovery, and power theft, with renewed commitments made by DisCos and GenCos to adhere to performance targets.
Industry experts at the meeting commended NERC for creating a platform where recurring issues can be addressed in a structured and consultative manner. Stakeholders expressed hope that resolutions reached would translate into better outcomes for end-users.
The NESI stakeholders’ forum is a quarterly engagement mechanism introduced by NERC to foster inclusive dialogue and accountability within Nigeria’s electricity value chain. As the nation works towards achieving energy sufficiency and affordability, the Commission reiterated its determination to enforce regulatory compliance across all market participants.
