The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed reports of a potential contract termination of Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, describing them as “fake news”.
Chelle, who was appointed in January on a two-year deal, had been rumored to be considering a shock exit due to mixed results in March’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers. However, a top NFF official has denied any truth to these claims.
The official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the NFF executive committee had not convened an emergency meeting to discuss Chelle’s contract. Instead, the coach is currently in Europe, where he is meeting with Nigerian players and scouting for new talent.
Chelle’s trip to Europe includes a meeting with Arsenal wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri, who is eligible to play for Nigeria. The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has impressed under Mikel Arteta and has represented England at youth level, but has not yet pledged allegiance to the senior team.
Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup are still slim, but Chelle remains optimistic. The Super Eagles are currently fourth in Group C, and their remaining four matches will be crucial in determining their fate.
Chelle has overseen two matches since his appointment, guiding Nigeria to a 2-0 victory over Rwanda and a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe.
