Niger State Issues Red Alert Over Heatwave, Warns of Potential Disease Outbreaks

The Niger State government has issued a red alert and heightened surveillance across all general hospitals to prevent disease outbreaks caused by the current heatwave. Investigations have shown that large numbers of elderly people and children have been visiting hospitals for treatment of heatwave-related diseases and symptoms such as meningitis and diarrhea.

Although the situation has not yet reached epidemic proportions, the Ministry of Secondary and Tertiary Health disclosed that a surveillance team has been deployed to the general hospitals to monitor and report any instances of heat-related diseases.

Commissioner for Secondary and Tertiary Health Bello Tukur assigned his Director for Public Health, Idris Ibrahim, to address concerns about the outbreak of heat-related diseases in the state. Ibrahim confirmed the intense heat in the state and noted that surveillance officers have been stationed at general hospitals to monitor and report such outbreaks.

“Every day, I have surveillance officers stationed in the general hospitals, and they have not informed me of any suspected or confirmed cases of meningitis and diarrhea. We collect data every week. Maybe there is one case here and there, but not an occurrence. However, if the numbers increase, it becomes worrisome,” Ibrahim said.

He added that while the state has not reached the point of having widespread meningitis cases in general hospitals, efforts continue to keep an eye on the situation. He emphasized the importance of proper ventilation to prevent the spread of diseases in areas prone to heatwaves.

For Islamic faithful observing Ramadan and others, Ibrahim advised drinking plenty of fluids and staying indoors or in shaded areas to reduce excessive fluid loss through sweating. He also urged those experiencing any illness to visit the nearest hospital for treatment.

The state government is also improving primary healthcare facilities, with about 100 new centers being constructed to bring healthcare closer to the people. Additionally, the recent employment of public health workers has strengthened monitoring efforts in zonal offices covering multiple local government areas.

In security-challenged areas, the state is working with the World Health Organization to ensure quick response to health issues. Ibrahim assured residents that the government remains vigilant and prepared to act swiftly in case of any disease outbreaks related to the heatwave.
