Nigeria Calls for Global Collaboration to Achieve Sustainable Energy Transition – Minister Alake

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to a just and inclusive energy transition, calling on the international community to foster stronger partnerships in addressing global energy challenges. This call was made by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, during his address at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Forum in Paris, France.

Dr. Alake emphasized that Nigeria’s transition to clean energy cannot be achieved in isolation and that global cooperation is crucial to ensuring that developing nations are not left behind in the race towards a more sustainable energy future. According to him, resource-rich countries like Nigeria must be strategically integrated into the global clean energy supply chain to ensure a fair and equitable energy transition.

Highlighting the country’s vast mineral resources — including lithium, cobalt, and other critical minerals essential for renewable energy technologies — the Minister noted that Nigeria is actively creating an enabling environment to attract foreign investment in the mining sector. He cited ongoing regulatory reforms and incentives designed to promote transparency, sustainability, and investor confidence in Nigeria’s solid minerals industry.

“Nigeria is fully aligned with the global pursuit of a cleaner, greener future. But we believe this journey must be collaborative,” Dr. Alake stated. “We must ensure that no region is marginalized and that all countries, especially those rich in critical resources, are active participants and beneficiaries in the energy transition.”

The Minister also underscored the importance of responsible mining practices, environmental protection, and community development as part of Nigeria’s broader strategy for sustainable growth. He said that through effective regulation and local beneficiation, the country aims to maximize the socio-economic benefits of its mineral wealth while supporting the global demand for clean energy technologies.

The OECD Forum provided a platform for dialogue among world leaders, industry experts, and policy stakeholders to advance sustainable economic development and environmental stewardship. Nigeria’s strong representation at the event reinforced its commitment to engaging meaningfully in global conversations on climate change, energy security, and inclusive development.

With its abundant natural resources and strategic policy direction, Nigeria is positioning itself as a key player in the global shift towards renewable energy — a move that is not only vital for environmental sustainability but also central to its national development objectives.
