The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended warm congratulations to the Federal Republic of Germany following the election of Friedrich Merz as the new Chancellor. Merz, the leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), emerged victorious on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, after securing 325 votes in the 630-seat Bundestag, marking a significant political shift in the European powerhouse.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria commended the German people for their unwavering commitment to democratic ideals, citing the peaceful and transparent nature of the electoral process as a model for global democracy.
“Nigeria commends Germany’s strong democratic traditions and values, which have once again been demonstrated through a peaceful and transparent electoral process,” the statement read. “We are confident that under Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s leadership, Germany will continue to play a pivotal role in advancing global peace, stability, and economic prosperity.”
The Nigerian government also used the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Germany. According to the Ministry, both countries share longstanding relations rooted in mutual respect, economic cooperation, and shared aspirations for global development.
“As longstanding partners, Nigeria looks forward to deepening bilateral relations with Germany in areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, security, renewable energy, and sustainable development,” the statement added.
Nigeria further expressed its readiness to work with the new German administration through multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, the African Union-European Union Partnership, and other international forums aimed at promoting peace, development, and climate action.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is also expected to send a personal letter of felicitation to Chancellor Merz, emphasizing Nigeria’s openness to continued strategic dialogue with Germany.
The Federal Government concluded its message by wishing Chancellor Merz a successful tenure and expressing optimism that his administration would usher in a new era of cooperation and progress for the people of Germany and the international community at large.
