Nigeria Customs Steps Up Talks with Industry Players to Unclog Cargo Clearance Delays

Lagos, Nigeria  – August 15, 2025

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has ramped up consultations with major industry stakeholders in a bid to tackle long-standing bottlenecks plaguing the country’s cargo clearance system.

During a series of high-level meetings in Lagos, Customs officials engaged freight forwarders, shipping firms, and terminal operators to address operational delays, compliance issues, and other factors slowing trade facilitation. The discussions are part of a broader push to improve efficiency at ports and border posts, shorten clearance timelines, and boost Nigeria’s standing in global trade rankings.

Customs representatives reaffirmed their commitment to reforms that will leverage technology, enhance transparency, and encourage stronger collaboration across the supply chain. They stressed that compliance from all stakeholders remains crucial for lasting improvements.

Participants welcomed the initiative, describing it as a long-overdue move to fix inefficiencies that have driven up costs and caused costly shipment delays for importers and exporters. The NCS assured that these engagements will be sustained as part of efforts to make Nigeria’s ports more transparent, competitive, and trade-friendly.
