Nigeria, DCO Sign Landmark Agreement to Boost Women’s Participation in Tech at UNGA

New York, USA | September 22, 2025

Nigeria and the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) have signed a landmark agreement to strengthen women’s participation in technology, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation. The deal was sealed on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, who represented Nigeria at the signing ceremony, described the partnership as a transformative step toward building inclusive digital economies. According to him, the initiative will open fresh opportunities for Nigerian women in coding, artificial intelligence, fintech, and other emerging technology fields.

The DCO Secretary-General, Deemah AlYahya, stressed that empowering women in technology was central to driving global economic growth. She noted that the collaboration with Nigeria, Africa’s largest digital market, would serve as a model for other developing nations.

The agreement will facilitate training programmes, mentorship, access to funding, and policy support for female innovators, with a focus on breaking barriers that limit women’s participation in the tech ecosystem.

Nigeria’s delegation at the UNGA said the move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises digital transformation, youth empowerment, and gender inclusion.

Observers described the deal as a strategic win for Nigeria, placing the country at the forefront of efforts to close the gender gap in technology while harnessing women’s potential to drive economic development.
