Nigeria Edges Rwanda 1–0 in Crucial World Cup Qualifier

Nigeria secured a vital 1–0 victory over Rwanda in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday. The win revives the Super Eagles’ hopes of reaching next year’s tournament.

The only goal of the match came in the 51st minute when Tolu Arokodare capitalized on a loose ball in the penalty area, slotting it past Rwanda’s goalkeeper. The first half had ended goalless as both sides adopted cautious strategies. Nigeria’s defense, marshalled by Calvin Bassey, held firm despite Rwanda’s tactical adjustments in the second half.

Nigeria suffered an early setback when star striker Victor Osimhen limped off with an ankle injury and was replaced by Cyril Dessers. Head coach Eric Chelle confirmed Osimhen’s injury would be assessed the following day to determine his availability for the next critical match.

The victory moves Nigeria to third place in Group C, six points behind leaders South Africa. The Super Eagles will face South Africa in a decisive qualifier on September 9, 2025, as they continue their quest for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
