Nigeria Finishes With One Silver at 2025 World Athletics Championships

Tokyo, Japan | September 23, 2025

Nigeria wrapped up its campaign at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo with a single medal, a silver won by hurdler Tobi Amusan in the women’s 100 metres hurdles.

Amusan, the reigning African champion, clocked 12.42 seconds to secure second place behind Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn. Her performance marked Nigeria’s only podium finish at the nine-day competition.

The country fielded 15 athletes across track and field events.

Among the standout performers was Ezekiel Nathaniel, who set a new national record of 47.11 seconds in the men’s 400 metres hurdles, narrowly missing a medal with a fourth-place finish. Sprinter Kayinsola Ajayi also impressed, reaching the men’s 100 metres final and placing sixth, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi finished fifth in the men’s shot put.

Nigeria’s overall performance placed the nation among countries tied with a single silver medal, ranking between 25th and 27th on the official medal standings depending on tie-break rules.

The 2025 Championships, held from September 13 to 21, featured athletes from more than 190 countries competing in Tokyo’s National Stadium.
