Nigeria, Germany Reaffirm 50-Year Development Partnership at Government Consultation in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria | August 8, 2025

Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their long-standing development cooperation, spanning over five decades, during a high-level Nigerian-German Government Consultation Meeting held today in Abuja.

The Honourable Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, received the German delegation led by Ambassador Annett Günther and senior officials from Berlin for strategic discussions on economic reforms, governance, climate resilience, and bilateral development priorities.

In his remarks, Senator Bagudu lauded Germany’s continued support and spotlighted Nigeria’s recent fiscal reform achievements. He noted that the country’s revenue-to-GDP ratio had improved by more than six percentage points within two years, with a new target of 18 percent set for 2026. “Efficiency, coordination, and mutual accountability are central to the success of our joint development programmes,” he stated.

The German delegation reaffirmed Berlin’s commitment to Nigeria’s reform journey, expressing support for ongoing fiscal consolidation, World Bank-assisted projects, and grassroots-focused interventions. Particular emphasis was placed on cooperation in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, digital public services, and private sector mobilisation.

Germany also praised Nigeria’s social development agenda, including the Renewed Hope Ward Development Scheme, which is expected to impact eight million Nigerians at the community level.

Both countries pledged to deepen collaboration on key development fronts, aligning their efforts to promote inclusive growth, environmental sustainability, and economic resilience in line with global development targets.
