Nigeria Immigration Service Launches e-Visa System, Digital Landing and Exit Cards

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has commenced the implementation of a new e-Visa system and fully automated landing and exit cards for international travelers, in a major push to enhance border security and modernize the country’s immigration process.

The new digital initiatives took effect on Wednesday, May 1, 2025, following a directive from the Federal Government. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, jointly announced the rollout at a media briefing in Abuja. According to them, the development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to digitize and streamline immigration procedures.

With the introduction of the e-Visa system, applicants will now be able to complete their visa application process entirely online. This includes document submission, payment, and receiving visa approval, thereby eliminating the need for physical presence at embassies or consulates. Authorities say the move will reduce visa processing time, enhance transparency, and cut out middlemen who often exploit applicants.

Simultaneously, the NIS also introduced electronic landing and exit cards, replacing the manual forms previously filled at ports of entry and departure. These new digital cards must be completed online before boarding flights to or from Nigeria. Airlines are now mandated to confirm that passengers have fulfilled this requirement before travel.

Speaking on the benefits of the reform, Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the system has been integrated with global databases, including Interpol’s, allowing Nigerian border authorities to perform advanced background checks on travelers. He added that a central visa approval center has been established at the NIS headquarters in Abuja, staffed by specially trained officers to manage the digital platforms efficiently.

As part of the broader reforms, the federal government has also approved a three-month amnesty for migrants who have overstayed or violated visa conditions, allowing them to regularize their status without penalties.

The policy shift is a collaborative effort between the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). It is designed to foster a secure and traveler-friendly immigration environment that aligns with global best practices.

Travelers and stakeholders have been urged to visit the official NIS website at immigration.gov.ng for access to the e-visa portal and the new digital landing and exit card forms.
