Nigeria Immigration Service Participates in Rabat Process Forum on Youth, Education and Migration

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reaffirmed its commitment to international cooperation on migration and development, with active participation at a high-level dialogue focused on youth, education, and innovation. The Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, pcc, mmis, fsmn, was represented by the Deputy Comptroller General in charge of the ICT and Cyber Security Directorate, M.T. Umar, at The Rabat Process thematic meeting held under the theme: “Youth, Education and Innovation: Driving the Future of Migration.”

The event brought together key stakeholders from across Central, West, and North Africa, as well as European nations, to exchange ideas, share strategies, and forge partnerships that would shape the future of migration policies and development initiatives. The forum, a component of the broader Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development, aims to promote effective migration governance through regional and international collaboration.

In her message, CG Nandap emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to constructive engagement on migration issues, particularly those affecting young people, who form the largest segment of migratory movements across the continent. She noted that education, digital innovation, and inclusive economic development are critical tools in addressing irregular migration and empowering youth to become agents of change in their communities.

The Nigerian delegation highlighted the country’s advancements in migration data management, digital border security, and youth-focused initiatives—particularly the NIS’s integration of technology through its e-border and e-passport systems. The agency stressed the importance of investing in youth education and skills development as a sustainable strategy to mitigate the root causes of migration pressures.

Speaking at the forum, Deputy Comptroller General M.T. Umar reaffirmed the NIS’s readiness to collaborate with international partners to enhance legal migration pathways, safeguard vulnerable migrants, and build a future-oriented migration framework that reflects shared responsibilities.

The Rabat Process continues to serve as a strategic platform for dialogue and action between countries of origin, transit, and destination. This year’s thematic meeting underscored the importance of placing youth at the heart of migration discourse and policy development.

Nigeria’s involvement in the forum underscores its active role in shaping regional migration policies and promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration as outlined in the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) and the African Union’s migration frameworks.
