Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for the urgent restructuring of Nigeria to ensure that citizens fully enjoy the dividends of democracy.
Speaking at a coalition meeting in Yola on Tuesday, Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, expressed concerns over the country’s current trajectory.
“We need a new movement to correct things. If we fail to act now, our children will become slaves in their own fatherland,” he warned.
Political Future and National Issues
Atiku also hinted at a forthcoming declaration regarding his political stance, urging his supporters to remain patient and vigilant.
“It is not yet time for me to speak on the politics of the country, but very soon, I will break my silence on my political position and other things going wrong in Nigeria,” he stated.
He emphasized the need for Nigerians to unite in working towards national interest, describing the emerging coalition as a vehicle for change.
Widespread Support for Atiku
The meeting was convened by Senator Ishaku Abbo, who reaffirmed Atiku’s political influence, stating that his leadership transcends party lines.
“The former vice president is our party and our symbol. Wherever he goes, we will follow,” Abbo declared.
Atiku’s leadership during his tenure as vice president was praised as a model of democratic governance, with many attendees pledging continued support for his vision of national restructuring.
Cross-Party Representation
The gathering saw participation from representatives across all 21 local government areas of Adamawa State, including key members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Notably, aides of Senator Aishatu Binani, the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate, were also present, further highlighting the coalition’s broad appeal.
An aide of Binani, speaking anonymously, confirmed her involvement in the coalition.
“For you to see me here, it is very clear that my principal is part of this movement. You can also see other APC members who are her supporters,” he said, adding that Senator Binani would likely attend the next coalition meeting.
Atiku’s renewed call for restructuring has once again sparked national discussions, as political stakeholders closely watch his next move
