Nigeria Partners with Armenia to Evacuate Citizens Safely from Iran Amid Rising Tensions

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has confirmed an ongoing collaboration with the Republic of Armenia to ensure the safe and orderly evacuation of Nigerian nationals currently in the Islamic Republic of Iran. This diplomatic arrangement, according to the Ministry, is being coordinated via Yerevan, the Armenian capital, which is serving as a transit hub for the evacuation efforts.

In a statement made available to KIIN360 News, the Ministry disclosed that the Nigerian government is taking proactive measures in response to escalating regional tensions and emerging security concerns in Iran. Officials emphasized that the safety and welfare of Nigerian citizens abroad remains a top priority of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, especially in volatile regions where unrest or diplomatic uncertainty poses potential risks to nationals.

According to senior officials at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the partnership with Armenia is both strategic and timely, as Armenia shares a border with Iran and has maintained relatively stable diplomatic relations with both countries. Yerevan, therefore, presents a viable and secure exit route for Nigerians requiring immediate relocation from Iran.

Sources within the ministry also noted that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran is working closely with Armenian authorities to streamline documentation, transportation, and temporary shelter arrangements for evacuees as they await onward travel back to Nigeria or alternative destinations. Emergency travel certificates and consular assistance are being provided where necessary to facilitate smooth transit.

The evacuation is said to affect a mix of Nigerian students, professionals, and other residents, some of whom have expressed concerns over recent geopolitical developments in the region, including increased tensions between Iran and Western powers, which have led to unpredictable security situations.

This development underscores Nigeria’s broader diplomatic posture in protecting its citizens overseas, especially in times of crisis. It also reflects the importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties with strategic partners such as Armenia, whose cooperation has proven instrumental in the success of the evacuation effort.

The Ministry urged all Nigerians currently residing in Iran to remain calm, maintain contact with the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, and adhere to all instructions issued by consular officials. Meanwhile, the evacuation process is ongoing, with more batches of Nigerians expected to be moved out in the coming days as logistics are finalized.
