Nigeria Police Chief Orders Review of Amnesty Report on South-East Killings

Abuja, Nigeria | August 16, 2025

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed an institutional review of Amnesty International’s latest report alleging extrajudicial killings and human rights violations in Nigeria’s South-East region.

The 128-page report, titled “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria”, was released by Amnesty International on August 13, 2025. It documents at least 1,844 deaths in the region between January 2021 and June 2023, attributing responsibility to state security agencies, secessionist militants, vigilante groups, and unidentified armed actors.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the IGP had instructed relevant police departments and field formations to conduct a “line-by-line assessment” of the report. The review will compare the allegations with operational records, field intelligence, and internal reports from commands and tactical units in the South-East.

Adejobi added that the exercise underscores the police leadership’s commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring accountability. However, it remains unclear whether the review will involve external oversight or be made public.

The Amnesty report calls for independent investigations into unlawful killings and abuses in the region, while urging Nigerian authorities to end impunity and bring perpetrators whether state or non-state actors to justice.
