Nigeria Pushes for Regional Energy Integration at Africa Oil Week 2025

Accra, Ghana – September 16, 2025

Nigeria has reaffirmed its leadership role in Africa’s energy sector, advocating for regional cooperation to reduce the continent’s reliance on imported fuel, which costs over $120 billion annually.
Speaking at the Africa Oil Week 2025 Ministerial and CEO Leadership Forum in Accra, Ghana, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, emphasized that integration remains Africa’s most viable strategy to achieve energy security.
Lokpobiri highlighted that shared infrastructure, harmonized standards, and technical expertise are essential for ending Africa’s energy poverty. He also announced the creation of the West African Reference Market (WARM), a platform leveraging Nigeria’s refining capacity to supply petroleum products across the region.
The minister’s remarks were issued in a press statement by Nneamaka Okafor, Special Adviser on Media and Communication to the Minister. These initiatives align with ongoing efforts to boost Africa’s energy independence and promote regional collaboration.
