Nigeria Rakes in $66m from Power Exports to Benin Republic in 2025

Abuja | September 12, 2025 — Nigeria earned $66 million in revenue from electricity exports to Benin Republic during the 2025 fiscal year, according to figures from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The commission disclosed that the earnings came from cross-border power sales under existing bilateral agreements, with Nigeria serving as a key supplier of electricity to its West African neighbour. The transactions were facilitated through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which ensured that supply was maintained despite domestic challenges in the power sector.

NERC explained that the revenue represents part of Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen regional energy integration and promote economic cooperation within the West African Power Pool (WAPP).

While stakeholders applauded the income generation, some expressed concern that Nigeria continues to grapple with unstable electricity supply at home. They urged the government to strike a balance between meeting local demand and fulfilling international obligations.

Energy experts, however, argued that such exports enhance Nigeria’s diplomatic leverage and demonstrate its capacity as a regional power hub, with potential to scale revenues if domestic infrastructure challenges are resolved.
