Nigeria Reaffirms Global Partnership Drive at TICAD9 in Japan

Yokohama, Japan — August 23, 2025

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to building stronger international partnerships, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu leveraging the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) to advance his government’s agenda of renewed diplomacy and investment attraction.

The summit, held from August 20–22, 2025 in Yokohama, Japan, brought together African leaders, Japan, and global partners to deepen cooperation on trade, development, and private-sector investment. Japan announced expanded financing initiatives for Africa, while Nigeria highlighted progress on Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-backed energy projects, including an estimated $238 million loan for power-grid expansion and a separate $190 million renewable-energy facility, pending final documentation.

President Tinubu’s participation underscored Abuja’s diplomatic strategy of fostering global alliances to attract capital, technology, and infrastructure support for Nigeria’s development priorities.

Editor’s note: Specific terms of the JICA facilities are awaiting official confirmation from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and JICA.
