The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has successfully facilitated the return of 203 vulnerable Nigerian citizens from Libya. The group, which included 130 women, arrived in Lagos as part of the Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) programme, a collaborative effort between the Federal Government and international partners aimed at assisting Nigerians stranded in Libya.
Upon arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the returnees underwent medical screening and received immediate assistance, including food, clothing, and psychosocial support. This support is part of a comprehensive reintegration programme designed to help returnees rebuild their lives and reduce the likelihood of re-migration.
Libya has long been a focal point for irregular migration, with many Nigerians seeking to transit through the country en route to Europe. However, the ongoing instability and insecurity in Libya have left numerous migrants stranded and vulnerable to exploitation. The VHR programme offers a safe and dignified return option for those wishing to come back to Nigeria.
This repatriation brings the total number of Nigerians assisted by the VHR programme to over 19,000 since its inception in 2017. The Nigerian government, in collaboration with international partners, continues to work towards providing sustainable solutions for migrants and addressing the root causes of irregular migration.
