Nigeria Strengthens Human Capital with New UN Partnerships

Abuja, Nigeria | September 28, 2025

The Federal Government of Nigeria has entered into a series of partnerships with United Nations agencies to advance human capital development, focusing on education, healthcare, workforce productivity, and institutional capacity.

In Abuja, officials confirmed that the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to drive digital transformation, innovation, and reform in the public sector.

Separately, Nigeria reached a US$174.6 million agreement with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) under the Programme for Country Partnership.

The initiative is designed to boost industrial capacity, promote technological innovation, and support youth and marginalized groups across the country.

The government has also approved US$1 billion to strengthen primary healthcare services as part of the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE) programme, alongside additional funding for HIV treatment and other health interventions.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking at the launch of the Human Capital Development (HCD) 2.0 Strategy, reiterated Nigeria’s target of ranking among the top 80 countries on the Global Human Capital Index by 2030.

He emphasized that the new strategy will align education, healthcare, and workforce reforms to accelerate inclusive growth.

While the agreements mark a significant step forward, officials noted that many of the programmes are at early stages of implementation, with outcomes expected to unfold over the coming years.
