Nigeria to Boost Cereal Production by 2.7 Million Metric Tonnes, Sets 2034 Target

Abuja, July 28, 2025 — The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled an ambitious plan to increase the country’s cereal output by 2.7 million metric tonnes over the next nine years, setting a target year of 2034 to achieve the milestone.

This strategic goal was revealed during a high-level agricultural development meeting in Abuja, where government officials and sector stakeholders discussed ongoing efforts to enhance food security and reduce the nation’s reliance on grain imports.

According to officials, the plan involves scaling up production of key cereals such as maize, millet, rice, sorghum, and wheat, through the adoption of improved seed varieties, mechanised farming practices, access to irrigation infrastructure, and enhanced extension services for smallholder farmers.

The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader agenda to boost local food production, stabilise commodity prices, and support job creation in the agricultural value chain. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture affirmed that the move is part of its long-term policy thrust to ensure self-sufficiency in staple food crops, particularly in the wake of rising global food inflation.

Experts say achieving the target will require sustained investments, private sector partnerships, and favourable climate-smart policies to protect farmlands and secure yields. If successful, Nigeria’s cereal production capacity could rise significantly above the current annual estimate of over 30 million metric tonnes.
