Nigeria to Field 14 Players at African Women’s Youth Handball Championship in Algeria

Abuja, Nigeria | September 9, 2025 — Nigeria will participate with a 14-player squad at the 2025 edition of the African Women’s Youth Handball Championship, which is set to kick off in Oran, Algeria.

The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) confirmed the final list after weeks of intensive training and selection exercises aimed at ensuring only the best players represent the nation. Officials explained that the decision aligns with the Confederation of African Handball (CAHB) regulations guiding team rosters for the continental event.

Nigeria’s youth team is expected to face stiff competition from other African powerhouses, including Angola, Egypt, and Tunisia, who are perennial contenders in the championship. The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the Women’s Youth World Handball Championship, raising the stakes for teams vying for continental glory.

HFN President, Samuel Ocheho, expressed optimism that the Nigerian team will perform creditably despite the tough opposition. He commended the players and coaching staff for their commitment during the preparatory phase and called on Nigerians to rally behind the team.

The championship in Oran is scheduled to begin this week, with matches expected to run for several days, bringing together Africa’s most promising handball talents in the youth category.
