A Nigerian-Australian woman has been arrested by security operatives over an alleged international student trafficking scheme involving 15 Nigerian students.
According to official sources, the suspect, whose identity has been withheld pending further investigations, allegedly lured the students under the pretense of securing educational opportunities in Australia. Upon arrival, the victims were reportedly subjected to exploitation, with some forced into menial labour under duress and without proper immigration documentation.
The arrest followed a joint operation between Nigerian authorities and international law enforcement agencies, acting on intelligence gathered over several months. Authorities said the suspect had been operating a fraudulent consultancy that promised visas, school admissions, and accommodation to unsuspecting families in Nigeria.
Speaking on the development, a senior official of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) described the case as “deeply troubling,” especially as it targets the hopes of young people seeking better education abroad.
“This is a clear violation of human rights and international laws on child and student protection. We are working with Australian counterparts to ensure justice for the victims and a full dismantling of the trafficking ring,” the official said.
Preliminary reports suggest the victims are currently in protective custody in Australia while arrangements are being made to assist them with legal representation and psychological support.
The Nigerian government has vowed to increase scrutiny on student travel consultancies and strengthen anti-trafficking laws to prevent future incidents.
Investigations are ongoing and further details are expected in the coming days.
