Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority Explores Adoption of China’s COMAC C919 for Local Airlines

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is currently reviewing the potential introduction of China’s domestically manufactured COMAC C919 aircraft into Nigeria’s commercial aviation sector. This consideration marks a strategic move to diversify the country’s fleet options and enhance the operational capacity of domestic airlines.

The COMAC C919, developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, is a narrow-body twin-engine airliner designed to compete with established models like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. Known for its fuel efficiency and modern avionics, the aircraft has been gradually gaining international attention as China seeks to expand its footprint in the global aviation market.

NCAA officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that technical evaluations and safety certifications are ongoing to determine the suitability of the C919 for Nigeria’s domestic routes and regulatory environment. If approved, the introduction of the aircraft could offer local carriers a cost-effective alternative for short and medium-haul flights, potentially reducing operational costs and improving passenger experience.

The move aligns with Nigeria’s broader aviation sector reforms aimed at modernising infrastructure, enhancing safety standards, and encouraging competition. It also reflects a growing trend among African airlines to explore partnerships beyond traditional Western manufacturers, leveraging emerging technologies and new aircraft options from Asia.

Industry experts have noted that successful integration of the COMAC C919 into Nigerian skies would require substantial pilot training, maintenance capability upgrades, and regulatory harmonisation to meet international aviation standards. Meanwhile, several Nigerian airlines have reportedly expressed preliminary interest in the aircraft, pending final approval from the NCAA.

As Nigeria continues to expand its domestic air travel market amid increasing demand, the possible adoption of the COMAC C919 presents an opportunity to deepen commercial ties with China and introduce innovation into the nation’s aviation landscape. Observers await further announcements as the NCAA completes its assessments and engages with stakeholders across the industry.
