Nigerian Medical Association Threatens Strike in FCT Over Sacking of Three Doctors

Abuja, Nigeria – June 14, 2025

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has issued a strike threat following the dismissal of three medical doctors by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

According to a statement released by the NMA, the doctors were sacked under circumstances the association described as unjust and unacceptable. The NMA accused the FCTA of breaching due process and failing to engage in meaningful dialogue before taking disciplinary actions.

Chairman of the FCT NMA, Dr. Charles Ugwuanyi, described the move as “a direct attack on medical professionalism and morale,” and warned that failure to reinstate the affected doctors could lead to a total shutdown of medical services in public hospitals across the capital.

“The NMA is prepared to take every necessary action, including industrial action, to defend the rights of its members and uphold the sanctity of medical ethics and fair labour practices,” the statement read.

In response, the FCTA has maintained that the disciplinary measures followed civil service procedures, but assured that it is open to further engagement with the association to resolve the matter amicably.

The looming industrial action raises concern over healthcare service delivery in the FCT, especially at a time when public hospitals are already stretched.
