August 22, 2025 — The government of New Zealand has announced that Nigerians are now eligible to participate in its newly introduced seasonal visa schemes, opening up fresh opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled workers seeking employment abroad.
The initiative, which falls under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) framework, introduces two new visa categories specifically designed to attract foreign labour into New Zealand’s agricultural and horticultural industries. The visas, valid for up to three years, will allow successful applicants to live and work in the country during seasonal periods.
According to the New Zealand authorities, the new schemes aim to address labour shortages in key sectors while also strengthening bilateral ties with participating countries, including Nigeria. Applicants will be required to meet set eligibility criteria, including proof of employment offers from accredited New Zealand employers, medical fitness, and compliance with immigration standards.
Officials further explained that the scheme is expected to benefit not only the New Zealand economy but also Nigerian workers, who will have the chance to gain international exposure, improve their skills, and contribute to diaspora remittances back home.
The development has been welcomed by migration experts, who describe it as a major step towards expanding Nigeria’s presence in international labour markets. They, however, urged prospective applicants to seek verified information and avoid falling prey to fraudulent recruitment agents.
With this announcement, Nigerians can now compete for seasonal work opportunities in New Zealand’s thriving industries, reinforcing the country’s status as a key partner in global workforce mobility.
