LOME, TOGO – July 17, 2025 — Nigeria’s rising sprint sensation, Jegede M. Adefunke, delivered a commanding performance in the 100m Heats at the ongoing 2025 African Athletics Championships (AAC), clocking a winning time of 12.13 seconds.
The race, which marked the start of the women’s sprint events at the continental championship, saw Jegede outpace her rivals with confidence and composure, sending a clear signal of her intent to contend for the podium in the final rounds.
Her time of 12.13s, although slightly shy of her personal best, was enough to comfortably secure her place in the semi-finals, drawing applause from spectators and athletics officials impressed by her speed and form.
Speaking shortly after the race, Jegede expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nigeria and promised to give her best in the remaining rounds. “It’s a privilege to wear the green and white. I’m focused on executing clean races and improving my time as the competition progresses,” she said.
Athletics enthusiasts have already begun touting Jegede as one of the key athletes to watch at this year’s championships, given her recent domestic form and explosive start in Lome.
With her sights set firmly on the finals, Nigeria’s hopes for a medal in the women’s 100m event appear promising, as Adefunke looks to blaze a trail for Team Nigeria in what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested sprint series at #AAC2025.
