ABUJA — Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, will lead the country’s delegation to the third African Union-European Union (AU-EU) Ministerial Meeting scheduled to hold from May 19 to 21, 2025, in Brussels, Belgium.
The meeting, which brings together foreign ministers from both continents, will focus on strengthening the AU-EU partnership across key areas including peace and security, governance, migration, and sustainable development.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tuggar is expected to deliver Nigeria’s intervention during the plenary session, with a particular emphasis on peace, security, and governance—issues central to the continent’s stability and progress.
Preliminary meetings will commence with the African Group of Ambassadors on May 19, followed by Senior Officials’ sessions on May 20. The main Ministerial Meeting will take place on May 21, where high-level delegations are expected to review the state of implementation of previous decisions and chart a strategic course for future collaboration.
The AU-EU partnership was formally established with the first summit in Cairo, Egypt, in 2000 and has since evolved into a structured platform for intercontinental dialogue and cooperation.
Ambassador Tuggar, who was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in August 2023, previously served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023. His participation at the Brussels talks signals Nigeria’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy and its role in advancing shared priorities with European partners.
The Nigerian delegation’s presence at the ministerial meeting underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to deepen international cooperation and contribute meaningfully to continental and global development agendas.
