Nigeria’s Internet Usage Soars to New Heights Despite 50% Tariff Increase

Abuja, Nigeria – July 4, 2025

Nigeria has recorded an unprecedented surge in internet usage, defying a recent 50% hike in data tariffs, according to new industry figures released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The report revealed that internet subscriptions grew by over 10% in the second quarter of 2025, reaching an all-time high of 172 million active users. This spike comes amidst mounting concerns over affordability following the tariff adjustment by telecom operators earlier this year.

Industry analysts attribute the unexpected growth to increasing dependence on digital platforms for education, business, remote work, and social engagement. Mobile broadband services continue to dominate usage patterns, with 4G and 5G networks accounting for over 80% of data traffic nationwide.

Despite the higher costs, digital adoption among young Nigerians and small businesses remains strong, driven by innovation, tech entrepreneurship, and expanded digital infrastructure across urban and semi-urban areas.

NCC officials say the growth reflects the resilience of Nigeria’s digital economy and the population’s adaptability. However, they acknowledged concerns about affordability and pledged to work with stakeholders to strike a balance between sustainable service delivery and consumer protection.

The development signals Nigeria’s growing reliance on digital connectivity, further underscoring the importance of internet access as a catalyst for national development, innovation, and inclusion.
