Nigeria’s Marine Minister Oyetola Addresses UN Ocean Conference in France, Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Blue Economy

Nice, France – June 10, 2025 – Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, delivered a compelling address at the United Nations Ocean Conference held in Nice, France, on Tuesday, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable ocean governance and harnessing the potential of its vast marine resources.

In his address to global leaders, scientists, and policymakers, Oyetola emphasized the urgency of global cooperation to combat marine pollution, protect biodiversity, and promote responsible exploitation of ocean-based resources — particularly for developing nations like Nigeria.

“Nigeria is blessed with over 850 kilometers of coastline and a significant maritime space. We are determined to sustainably harness these resources to boost food security, trade, climate resilience, and economic growth for our people,” he stated.

The Minister also used the global platform to highlight recent initiatives launched under the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy since its creation, including the implementation of port modernization programs, marine environmental protection strategies, and a renewed focus on aquaculture development to support livelihoods.

Oyetola drew attention to Nigeria’s investment in climate-resilient infrastructure and its drive to transition to cleaner energy in coastal operations, in alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). He further called on international partners and donors to support capacity-building efforts and knowledge exchange to empower coastal communities and maritime institutions across Africa.

“A sustainable blue economy is not just an option — it is a necessity for national survival and regional stability. Nigeria stands ready to work with the global community to restore ocean health and unlock marine-based opportunities,” Oyetola added.

The conference, which gathers ocean experts and world leaders every two years, aims to accelerate science-based solutions to pressing challenges such as overfishing, rising sea levels, and ocean acidification. Nigeria’s participation signals a growing awareness of the blue economy’s potential to drive inclusive development and economic diversification.

Oyetola’s presence in France follows a series of regional consultations with ECOWAS maritime stakeholders, reinforcing Nigeria’s role as a maritime hub in West Africa.
