Eugene, Oregon – June 15, 2025
Nigerian sprinter Samuel Ogazi has etched his name into athletics history by breaking a 26-year-old record to win the men’s 400-meter title at the 2025 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The 19-year-old sensation, representing the University of Alabama, clocked a stunning time of 44.22 seconds, surpassing the previous NCAA record set in 1999. His performance not only earned him the gold medal but also marked him as the fastest collegiate 400m runner in more than two decades.
Ogazi’s historic win has ignited celebration across Nigeria and the global athletics community, as he becomes the latest Nigerian athlete to dominate the American collegiate track circuit.
“It means everything to me — I’ve worked so hard for this moment,” Ogazi said shortly after the race. “Breaking a record that has stood for over two decades is an incredible feeling.”
The Nigerian Athletics Federation has hailed the achievement, calling Ogazi’s triumph a promising sign ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he is expected to represent Nigeria.
Ogazi’s performance continues a strong showing for Nigerian athletes at global levels, with many competing and excelling in top international meets.
