Abuja – June 12, 2025
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has declared that Nigeria’s democratic journey over the past 26 years stands as a beacon of hope and a model for other nations in West Africa.
Speaking during the Democracy Day celebrations, Tuggar emphasized that Nigeria’s sustained democratic governance has not only contributed to national stability but has also strengthened the country’s role as a regional leader in promoting democratic values, peace, and institutional development.
“Nigeria’s democratic resilience is proof that democratic consolidation is achievable in Africa,” Tuggar said. “Our commitment to regular elections, peaceful transitions, and the rule of law makes us a reference point for our neighbours in the sub-region.”
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to support regional bodies like ECOWAS in fostering democracy, security cooperation, and sustainable development across West Africa.
The minister’s remarks come as the country commemorates June 12, the day officially recognized as Democracy Day, in honour of the annulled 1993 election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history.
