Abuja, Nigeria – June 14, 2025
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted a three-day spell of thunderstorms and rainfall across several states in Nigeria, beginning Saturday, June 14, through Monday, June 16, 2025.
The weather outlook, released by the agency on Friday in Abuja, warns of intense weather activity in northern, central, and southern regions, and urges the public to take precautionary measures to avoid weather-related hazards.
According to NiMet, early morning thunderstorms are expected on Saturday in parts of Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa states. Later in the day, widespread thunderstorms and rainfall are anticipated in Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Borno, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.
In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms will likely affect Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Rain and thunderstorms are also expected later in the day across Kogi, Kwara, and other parts of the zone.
For the Southern region, cloudy skies and early morning showers are forecasted over Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa. As the day progresses, isolated thunderstorms with rainfall are likely across most southern states including Imo, Abia, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, and Delta.
The weather pattern is expected to continue on Sunday, with morning thunderstorms in Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba, and subsequent downpours across Zamfara, Gombe, and Bauchi.
The North-Central states, including the FCT, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, and Benue, are expected to experience thunderstorms with intervals of sunshine, while the Southern region will witness rainy mornings and widespread thunderstorms later in the day.
By Monday, NiMet predicts similar weather conditions with morning thunderstorms over Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba, followed by rainfall in Kano, Katsina, Gombe, and Bauchi.
Thunderstorms are forecasted to persist in Kwara, Plateau, Kogi, and Nasarawa, while the Southern region will remain cloudy with rainfall likely across all zones, particularly in Edo, Delta, Ondo, Ogun, and Bayelsa.
NiMet advised the public to remain cautious, stating that strong winds may accompany thunderstorms, potentially leading to damage or danger.
“Loose objects should be fastened to avoid collisions. Avoid driving under heavy rain, and disconnect electrical appliances during storms,” the agency warned.
Residents are urged to stay updated through official NiMet channels and practice basic safety protocols, especially in flood-prone areas. Airline operators are also advised to obtain airport-specific weather updates from NiMet for effective flight planning.
