NiMet Warns of Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorms, and Flood Risk Nationwide from Monday to Wednesday

August 11, 2025

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and a heightened risk of flooding in several parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday.

According to NiMet, the weather system is expected to affect states across the North, Central, and Southern regions, with coastal and riverine communities particularly vulnerable to flash floods and overflowing waterways. The agency noted that areas with poor drainage systems could experience significant waterlogging, while urban centres may face disruptions in transportation and daily activities.

NiMet advised residents in high-risk zones to take precautionary measures, including clearing blocked drainages, avoiding flooded routes, and securing properties against strong winds and possible storm damage. Farmers, motorists, and local authorities were also urged to stay alert and follow updates through official weather channels.

The agency emphasised that early preparedness could minimise potential losses and safeguard lives, especially in communities prone to seasonal flooding during the peak of the rainy season.
