NIPOST Refutes Drug‑Trafficking Allegations, Denies Linking Courier Abuse to Tinubu Administration

Abuja, July 8, 2025 — The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has strongly denied claims that it confirmed courier services are being misused to traffic hard drugs since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office. The agency dismissed the reports as false and misleading, stressing it never attributed any such statement to President Tinubu’s administration .

A media outlet had published that NIPOST’s General Manager of Courier and Logistics Regulation in Ondo State, Oludotun Sounde, warned of increasing drug trafficking via courier firms operating from car parks and private offices, noting the illicit trade posed national security and economic threats. It was further alleged the agency tied this surge to the Tinubu government .

In response, NIPOST spokesperson Franklin Alao categorically rejected the story, stating: “This is categorically FALSE … At no point has NIPOST made such a statement or associated these activities with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” He reaffirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance policy for misuse of postal services, clarifying that NIPOST actively works with security agencies—including NDLEA, the Nigeria Police Force, and Customs—to enforce courier regulations .

The agency stressed it is currently revalidating courier licenses, enforcing mandatory Know‑Your‑Customer (KYC) requirements, and conducting compliance audits to ensure licensed operators adhere to regulations .

Earlier reports from Oludotun Sounde had indeed raised alarms over unlicensed courier operators smuggling drugs and weapons, and noted NIPOST’s regulatory clampdown—including sealing illegal offices and confiscating motorcycles . However, these statements made no reference to the Tinubu administration.
