NIPOST Raises Alarm Over Illegal Courier Operators Aiding Drug, Arms Trafficking

July 6, 2025 | Abuja, Nigeria

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has expressed grave concern over the activities of unlicensed courier and logistics companies allegedly being used to transport hard drugs and firearms across the country.

Speaking at the Courier and Logistics Regulatory Department (CLRD) Stakeholders’ Conference in Abuja, the General Manager of the department, Mr. Dotun Shonde, disclosed that some unregistered operators are engaging in criminal acts under the guise of delivery services.

According to Shonde, “There is rising evidence that certain illegal courier firms are being used as channels for trafficking illicit substances and arms. These acts pose serious threats to national security and public safety.”

He stated that many of these outfits operate without regulatory approval, evade taxes, and compromise industry standards. He further noted that the proliferation of unlicensed delivery companies has made it difficult to track the movement of dangerous goods, which law enforcement agencies have flagged as a rising concern.

To address the situation, NIPOST reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying monitoring, enforcement, and collaboration with security agencies such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Customs Service, and the Nigeria Police Force.

“We are calling on the public to be cautious and patronize only licensed operators. We will not hesitate to shut down erring companies and prosecute those found culpable,” Shonde warned.

The Postal Service urged all courier and logistics firms to comply with registration guidelines and operational standards to sanitize the sector and restore trust.
