The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Chapter, has called on the Lagos State Government to raise its minimum wage to ₦150,000 for workers, citing the rising cost of living in the state.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, the Lagos NLC Chairperson, Mrs. Funmi Sesi, argued that accommodation, transport, food, and utility costs in Lagos were significantly higher than in other states. She urged the government to review the current ₦85,000 minimum wage, which was approved in 2024, to better reflect economic realities.
The demand comes in response to recent wage increases by other states. On August 27, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma approved a new ₦104,000 minimum wage for civil servants, while on August 28, the Ebonyi State Executive Council announced a rise to ₦90,000.
While labour leaders say these developments should push Lagos to act, the ₦150,000 proposal remains a union demand. The Lagos State Government has not yet announced any change to its current wage structure.
