NMDPRA Clarifies CNG Price Hike: No Subsidies in Oil and Gas Sector

Abuja, Nigeria – Friday, September 6, 2025

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has clarified that there are no subsidies in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, emphasizing that the market operates under a fully deregulated framework.

The Director of the Public Affairs Department, Mr. George Ene-Ita, made the statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday, addressing recent reports suggesting that the Federal Government had removed subsidies or raised the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

According to NAN, CNG refilling stations in the Federal Capital Territory increased prices earlier this week from ₦230 to ₦380 per Standard Cubic Meter (SCM), leading to long queues. Mr. Ene-Ita explained that the price adjustments reflect market dynamics and are not linked to any government-imposed subsidy removal.

He further noted that limited infrastructure and the scarcity of refilling stations have contributed to supply constraints and increased waiting times at CNG stations.

The NMDPRA reaffirmed that all CNG pricing is regulated within the framework of Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, ensuring market-driven operations while protecting consumer interests.
